ZAL Discourse: Multimodal AI Innovations for the Aviation of Tomorrow

How can Artificial Intelligence optimize aircraft maintenance? What role does verifiable AI play in drone decision-making? And how can AI be reliably implemented in the aviation industry? These questions were at the heart of the ZAL Discourse “Multimodal AI in Aviation.”

Experts discussed predictive maintenance, the verifiability of AI systems, and the transfer of simulations to the real world. Philipp Conen (DLR) explained how predictive maintenance models can be trained using synthetic data. He also showcased his test setup, where real data on material fatigue is used to validate the models. A highlight was Thilo Fryen’s live demo, where he presented a verifiable AI that provides drone pilots with safe landing site recommendations and transparently explains why these decisions were made—without autonomously performing the landing.
